They were in
a French mag (a Vogue?) round about
1994-95. Broche en forme d’une paire de
koalas… Pink diamonds. Silly but adorable.
Then I lost the ruddy mag. For years I thought
I’d never find my pink koalas again. And it took years, too, before I plucked up
the courage to face the disappointment of a failed Internet search. But gee, sometimes
there is serendipity. Struggled
through half a page of googled results, each pic worse than the last… Finally clicked
on one that looked maybe right, got
onto the Sotheby’s website the original came from and voilà!
The
Pink Koala Brooch
18 KARAT TWO-COLOR GOLD, PINK DIAMOND, DIAMOND AND ONYX DOUBLE-CLIP
BROOCH, GRAFF:
The embracing koala bears set with numerous round pink diamonds weighing
approximately 23.70 carats, the arms and ears accented by round near colorless
diamonds weighing approximately 3.50 carats, with the eyes and noses set with
onyx, … signed Graff on the carrier; may be worn as two separate brooches. With
signed box.
Yep, a brooch
of pink diamonds in the form of a pair of koalas. I’ll never afford it or anything
like it, but gee, who cares? I’ve found my pink koalas again!
Pink is quite
rare in diamonds, but it crops up in lesser stones. Well, lesser in that they’re
not as valuable—but they are just as pretty. Have a look at these, from the
